Mosquito and Tick Yard Treatment Program

The yard walk comes before the sprayer. Mosquitoes and ticks do not live evenly across an acre — they concentrate in a narrow band, and on Fallston properties that band is almost always the same: the first ten feet of woods edge, the shaded ivy bed on the north side of the house, the stone wall with two years of leaf litter piled against it, and the spot under the deck where the downspout drains. Ticks are picked up at the edges, not in the middle of a mowed lawn, which is why the tree line and the ground cover get the attention on our visits while open turf gets very little product. Straight trade-off: a barrier treatment reduces the population inside the treated zone for a few weeks — it does not sterilize a yard, and it does not stop a mosquito from flying in from woods across the property line. Rain, heavy irrigation and a hot stretch all shorten how long an application holds, which is the whole reason the interval is three weeks instead of three months.

Well water, septic fields and vegetable gardens shape how the work gets done here. Most homes around Pleasantville, Upper Crossroads and the Trappe Church Road area are on private wells, so wellheads, spring boxes and any surface water get a buffer and no product. Point out your vegetable beds, herb pots, fish pond and beehives before we start and they are flagged and skipped. Everything is applied according to the product label, applications are made to foliage and harborage rather than broadcast over open lawn, and the standard direction is to keep kids and dogs off treated plants until the material has dried.

The other half of the job is water you can count. Asian tiger mosquitoes breed in a bottle cap of water and rarely travel far, so a container census around the house matters more than any spray: kiddie pools, tarp folds over firewood, clogged gutters on 1970s–90s subdivision homes near the Route 152 and Route 1 crossroads, saucers under deck planters, and the low spot in the yard that stays wet for a week after a storm. Emptying and correcting those sources removes the mosquitoes being produced on your own property, and it is the part homeowners can keep up between visits.
